is the glass half full or half empty!

after the evening I've had, i dont care if its half empty or half full as long as half of it has JD in it!

Me and Jen have decided to spice our 365 up to stop us getting bored, so this week monday to friday we can only use f2.8 for our 365 snaps! so F2.8, 1/15 ISO  800 with a little flash!

the 'NEW" 366 challenge

So as promised the new 366 challenge. Every week monday to friday me and Jen will set ourselves an additional challenge to spice up the 366. This week...

The f2.8 challenge... So what does this mean?

f2.8 is when the aperture is wide open on Jens tamron, doesn't exist on Steves sigma 10-20 and its not quite fully open on the 35m (which does f1.8). when the aperture is open to its widest setting it forces the camera to have to use a very quick shutter speed (light depending) which in turn creates very little depth of field. (very little sharp area) so if we are to use this setting our pictures will be not be able to be great expanses of focused glory (no landscape shots then) and macro shots will have to be focused very well other wise the wrong bit will be in focus and the centre attraction blurred.

so... this means that we will have to really think about the shot we choose, and also the light we use to create it, no cheating this week!!

Pics to follow later..

day 116 and 117 of the 366

so two wee morsels to digest.. Jen teaching layers in club after I set her up saying we would do it, then when see got stuck in leaving her to it! mean maybe, but it helped her realise that she could do it with out the nerves and stress before hand, I was never gonna run away if she wasn't happy though! (honest guv)

and then Llanelli's old docks, night time play which failed cos i wasn't thinking! i always do this! :(

A challenge has been set

The 366 has been a real drag for me latley, I feel uninspired and bored. It has be come a chore and that is not why I agreed to taking part in it. The 365 has in the past pushed me to be creative with the simplist of things, to push boundrys, see something with a diffrent perspective and put my own interpritation into a shot. That side of the 365 has now felt lost to me and ive been hanging in there hoping it is just a phase, but alas that hasn't passed.

Now steve I would call a genius, but im not because his head would swell more than what it has already, he has come up with an idea. What if every sunday one of us would come up with a challenge with in the 365 challenge that would last monday to friday (weekends free for camera play of own choice).

Now for example , lets say this sunday it is decided that the 365 shot was only alowed to be shot with ONLY ONE click of the shutter. that would mean that we would have to compose , adjust light aperture and shutter speed and have it all set up just for that one press of the button. If it went wrong on the other hand and didnt get shot then tough, that would have to be the 365.

There are more lessons to be learnt I think, and this will push us further along in our knowledge. Hehehe fun to be had.

for all our 365 visit http://365llanelli.blog.com/

(to add my 6p worth if I may!!! i don't have a swollen head! but genius, well thats probably fair! I think that challenges are always a great way to push ourselves, but fear of 'getting it wrong' often prevents us from taking part, the 366 was never about a perfect picture, but about a picture so this challenge will add a learning dimension and relive pressure of getting and seeing a perfect shot each night. instead it becomes about learning to use  props, colours or even simply words to inspire and about using tools and techniques to there best so they become engrained in our theoretical framework. Shutter bug!

Well interesting fact, or useless knowledge, since dec 2010 I have taken roughly 12,000 images that's approx 27 a day... Jen in about 8months of camera ownership has managed 7,900 that's 32 a day. So with those figures stacked against us the 366 should be a doodle we only need 1 a day. :)

Squiggle!

these little fellas were playing all day outside my office window! well I had to didn't I

Steve Milton 114

I'm often asked how i maintain my figure!

A little catch up

Well it been a while since I've updated the blog with something other than 365, so I thought I would let you all know where I am in the grand scheme of things.

Lens

Well you all should know by now about my new buy, Tamron sp 90 a lovely portrait and macro lens, and you should all know by now that it was also a long time coming. This beautiful lens has taught me alot, just for having to walk a great distance back from my potential subject matter in my photo, well different to steves 10mm lens. So Steve has set a challenge, we will be swapping lens for one day just for the change in perspective and knowing that it will totally throw us. We are quite excited by the idea (except if i see a awesome bug, its mine) . So pics to come sometime next week :).

Photoshop

As for what I have learnt from the special effects comp that was last week, my understanding of photoshop and its ability to manipulate images has drasticly improved. Having to rush (my own fault) my entry in three days including taking pics has really pushed me to explore the software further. And my ability to work out a solution with in the program with out button bashing has improved greatly, but hey button bashing is how we learn through trial and error.

It has also rekindled my artisic side and maybe this willl be my medium for now, so sorry acrylics you will have to stay on the shelf for a little longer. So we shall see what images can be produced by both of us, with camera and photoshop (won't post art here but will defo link it).

Here is day 114 .. not quite seeing the light at the end of the tunnel yet lol

the 366 and all its woes!

of late I seem to spend a lot of time talking about the 366! How much I'm hating it, or loving it am demotivated, or..... so i thought I would raise the idea in a post of its own.

it is fair to say that it isn't easy, taking a picture everyday is easy, but we don't want to just take a picture, everyone counts, everyone deserves to be a learning experience or a chance to play with ideas. its this design for lifelong learning which is the ultimate flaw, how do you stay keen to learn when each day your driven to push yourself, no matter how tired or demotivated. Ok its true that not every pic is a work of art, or even the result of much effort.. but behind every pic is a mind thinking, looking, dreaming the next oppertunity.

the more the idea of the 366 brings fear in to the shutter button fingers across the land, the more it excites, the better the challenge becomes, its harder each day and yet the mind becomes full of ideas, of a quest to see, to day dream and to think in colour.

so im loving to hate it right? yea pretty much, but i am aware of one thing, each day I get better, each idea becomes harder to work out, and yet solutions become simpler, less complex in there mannerisms. each picture offers a greater sense of learning and achievement, and yet the simplest of these become as valid as the most complex. Take the apple a simple shot, sat there looking at me, shiny and smooth, bright red and lost in a dark backdrop, as symbolic as it can be, yet so so simple and easy to look at. and then the clown or Jens eye, deeply edited pics with hours spent crafting each bubble or blossom leaf, scales and splashes added to eyeliner removed, dusty mess that macro joys bring with it! and yet these pics, as triumphant they might stand will be forgotten for another claim soon. if its not for competition or challenge then I might still be out walking the waters edge each night hopping for the sky to fire up so I can go home happy and easy to bed with no worries or nightmares. I would not have had the 2nd place and Jen her win, and as much as art is about its purpose and creation than recognition or praise, it is nice to know your going down the right track.

so 366, bring it on, lets have another week of your menacing, and another week of your daydreaming, I cant quit, quitting would be like sawing an arm of at the moment and thats would simply not work!

platform 1

playing with ideas for street photography, if I'm honest not something that comes easily, I am conscious with the camera and how others might feel or see it!
a compromise with this motion blurred effect led to another chance snap 10mins later, and that one is a keeper!

knowing i bought the right lens

From the day I bought my lens I have not regreted spending the money. She is beautiful, going from f2.8 (on limit) all the way to f64 (when using macro). Depth of field is no longer that much of an issue, i am so pleased i din't go with the 40mm macro lens i first fancied.

also discovered doing this shot that freezing flowers for photographing after can be a problem, they defrost so quick and the cellls burst to make blisters on the petals.

Jennyxx

such a pretty world close up

Experimenting with using bellows, carl Ziess and LED lights, to create softer super close macro shots rather than the normal vivid images.

I Love the colours in the above shot, just wish it was sharper and the shot to the left perhaps a little more light bleeding in would have been nice, using the tripod for long exposures and lighting control is great and offers so much more opportunities, of course it also means traipsing half the garden through the house.. :(

fly me away!

A little play down the beach, Balloons left over from another play...

I love simplicity, and a like images that leave you to decide the story.

What do you think?

Llansteffan Castle

inspired from yesterdays visit at Llanelli Photographic society I set off to the beach for sunset! unfortunately it just didn’t happen, so a long exposure of the castle lights instead.

taken at 250mm telephoto zoom, 20's exposure from ferryside! had the sunset happen this could have been lovely, so will try another day!

Tuesday 10 April 2012

peas please!

been a bit lame of late, seems all my work has been tied up else where and the 366 is becoming a snapshot derby! anyhow a tin of peas waiting to get pinged!

i really hope to get out and get some proper play time soon, it seems the pics are a bit flat on me at the mo. Photoshop has consumed my energies for the special effects cup!

Monday 9 April 2012

would you put your knee down in that...

well i love my bike, but i wouldn't. what a wet and miserable day, this pics doesn't do the welsh weather justice at all.
half an hour before and it was throwing it down, a lot of people were leaving for the day and i can't blame them, my little beasty is locked top in the garage on such days theses days!

anyhow, with out a good sports lens and manual focused I'm quite pleased!

Saturday 7 April 2012

a lovely stroll at sunset, and some unexpected waterscaping in Pwll,

Wednesday 4 April 2012

lensbaby yeah!!

Thanks to Gary for letting me have a play with his Lensbaby, I want one, I really really want one now!!! I think you need to think about completely different shots to make the extremes of this lens scream and shout at you, and for sure there not going to take shots that please everyone, but I think the potential to make abstracts from nature is huge!

Tuesday 3 April 2012

New lens . Mwahahahahahahahaha

well i bought it Mwahahahahahahahahahaha

macro fun,

a little macro play. reversed 35mm lens 2 images hand held then stacked manually.

the old Carl Zeiss lens and reversing ring combo has really taught me loads, and getting this shot today has made me smile!

filament: day 93!

was trying to watch a film, and hour later I'm asking who the characters are and i have a camera in my hand, i guess its time to give up on film then eh!!!

loved the intricacy of this little bulb in my lamp, with all these modern bulbs you forget how pretty these filament bulbs were.

Sunday 1 April 2012

the work that steve has helped me to do

Not a photography shot i know , but its a pic of the day .. and i have to show off my work done on the garden... well happy. and thank you verrry verry much Steve Milton

Jennyxx

wait till the tide come in! :)

yes another sunset! but I love them, despite the fact that my hands were like ice taking this shot!

today I wanted to have another play with trying to capture a little robin i saw yesterday, It was going ok, I arrived at the location and he's was there waiting for me, I fired a few shots off and he left without waiting for me to check my pics. needless to say they were crap. I did hope to catch him again, but several noisy kids did there best to scare him off :(

anyhow a second play later in the day and I got this, its ok.. I need a proper play though, try something new..
